Personality:
Marie D'Ancanto is a contradictory character, one who generally relies on instinct rather than careful planning.
Where "flight or fight" responses are called for, Marie generally chooses to flee. The first time this occurs is traumatic, resulting in Marie almost killing a boy the first time she kisses him, likely leading to Marie's tendency to rely on that reaction. When she hurts her boyfriend David by kissing him, she runs away from home and goes from Mississippi up to Canada. After Marie takes Logan's powers to heal herself when he accidentally stabbed her, she becomes convinced through one source that the Professor is furious with her. Rather than try to weather she storm, she chooses to run away again and brave the world alone. She also decides, when a cure is developed for mutant abilities, to take it rather than continue on what has been, so far, unsuccessful attempts to control her powers.
Even though Marie would rather run than stand her ground, she doesn't lack in courage. When she runs away from her family home and makes her way to Canada, she does so alone. She hitchhikes her way to Alberta. Once there, she sees Logan and his claws and decides to stowaway in his trailer. Even once caught, she argues with him to let her stay. When she leaves the Xavier Institute, she once again strikes out on her own, willing to face the world by herself rather than risk hurting anyone. After the Institute is attacked and she's on the run with Bobby, Logan, and John, Marie uses her powers to force John not to attack police officers by drawing power away from him. Later, she and Bobby are alone in the X-Jet while the 'adults' of the team attack the people responsible for the assault on the Institute, and the two teenagers realize they need to move the jet. Marie takes the pilot's seat, despite having been pulled out of the jet only the day before when the back was taken off by a missle and her seatbelt wasn't fastened, and flies to where the team needs them to be. The actions clearly shake her, and she has to be talked into letting go of the controls by Storm, but she manages it.
One of the most notable things about Marie is that she is, when the cards are on the table, a survivor. She withstands everything that's thrown at her and adapts to the situations as they come. When she runs away from home, she keeps herself safe and fed on her journeys and makes it all the way to Canada. She takes on a new name, calling herself 'Rogue' when she runs into Logan. When she arrives at the Institute, she integrates with the other children, wearing gloves so she won't accidentally touch any of them. When she wakes Logan and is accidentally stabbed by him, Rogue uses the powers she's afraid of to borrow his ability to heal. She survives (with Logan's help) Magneto's attempt to use her powers to absorb his and sacrifice her lifeforce to a machine meant to turn all of New York into mutants.
Marie cares about those she's close to and she wants to be close to. When she hurts David, her instinct is to withdraw from her family, screaming for them not to touch her, not wanting to hurt them, too. During Logan's nightmare, she hears him and tries to rouse him, even though that leads to her getting hurt. Marie is also the second closest person to John, who is Bobby's best friend, and she tries to keep him with the X-Men and from arguing too much with Bobby.
Marie shows a great amount of pride, much of it tied to her appearance. When her hair takes on two white streaks in the front from Magneto's attempt on her life, Marie tells Logan at the end of the first film that she's decided she likes the look. She also makes a point of threateningly pulling off one glove when Magneto and Mystique seem to mock the look of her hair. She is a bold flirt, from her first boyfriend, David, to Bobby. She plays up her Southern charm and seems quite happy to goad John with a bit of flirting, even if she's devoted to Bobby. It also seems like an insult to her pride that she has a boyfriend but can't touch him, a point of constant frustation to her even when Bobby continually assures her it doesn't bother him. When she gets the cure, Logan tells her to be sure she's doing it for herself. Bobby tells her, when she returns, that he didn't want her to do it, and she responds with simply, "It's what I wanted." While the attention from Bobby and John is important to her, what ultimately matters most is her own pride, being able to have the life she wanted.
